Jian Hong was born and has lived all of her life in Zhuhai (珠海
Zhūhǎi),
a city in Guangdong Province, China. The city’s name means “Pearl Sea” and
relates to the fact that Zhuhai is located on the Pearl River Delta, where the
Pearl River flows into the South China Sea. Zhuhai is one of the southernmost cities in China and is
located just 39 miles west of Hong Kong, approximately 300 miles east-northeast
of Hanoi, Vietnam, and approximately 1,500 miles south of Beijing.
Often referred to as the “Chinese Riviera,” Zhuhai is known
for its beautiful long coastline, waving palm trees, open spaces, low
population density, and its many islands. Zhuhai is also known as the “City for
Lovers” and the “City of a Hundred Islands.” Zhuhai is a major tourist destination in China and it is a
popular place for retirement.
The weather in Zhuhai is sub-tropical. Temperature varies
between 50F degrees in winter (December to February) to a hot and humid 95F
degrees in summer (June to September).
